Unlike traditional reactors that require constant cooling, Thorcon’s design eliminates overheating risks by using a self-regulating molten salt system. Even in a total power failure, our reactors remain stable without external energy input.

In the event of an emergency, Thorcon’s liquid fuel drains into multiple, small cooling tanks, where it passively sheds heat and remains stable indefinitely. This allows ample time for inspection, repairs, or intervention without immediate safety risks.

Thorcon’s design is simple to operate and does not require specialized nuclear expertise. Unlike traditional reactors, which need highly trained operators and constant oversight, Thorcon’s system is built to function safely with minimal oversight.

Inspired by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Molten Salt Reactor Experiment, Thorcon’s robust approach to safety draws heavily from the findings and conclusions harvested from years of Oak Ridge molten salt reactor operations.
